Custom Floating Concrete and Wood Slat TV Wall in Dallas, Texas

This completed project in Dallas, Texas does not fit neatly within one of our established media wall series - and that was exactly the point.

The homeowner wanted a completely custom architectural TV feature consisting of three visually distinct sections: a projecting upper volume with a decorative concrete-effect finish, a central section of warm wood slats, and a substantial lower platform finished with black granite tile and marble-inspired veining.

The result is a bold, carefully balanced composition created specifically around the client’s vision and the architecture of the room.

A Custom Media Wall Without a Fireplace

Although the television is displaying fireplace imagery in the photographs, this project does not include an integrated electric fireplace. The image of the flames is simply content displayed on the TV.

Instead of following the conventional television-over-fireplace arrangement, the design uses contrasting forms, depths, and materials to create architectural interest.

The installation functions as a custom TV wall and sculptural interior feature rather than a fireplace media wall.

Three Connected Architectural Elements

The media wall is organized into three primary sections. Each section has a different material and visual character, but the three are proportioned to read as one unified composition.

1. Projecting Concrete-Effect TV Volume

The upper section is a dimensional build-out that projects forward from the central wood-slat section, creating a floating or overhanging visual effect.

Its surface is finished with a hand-applied decorative cement coating that creates the appearance of raw architectural concrete. Subtle tonal variation, movement, and irregular texture prevent the large surface from feeling flat or manufactured.

A large television is mounted directly to this upper volume. Power and media wiring are concealed within the structure, allowing the screen to remain the only visible technology.

The television is integrated almost edge-to-edge across the width of the projecting section, reinforcing the strong horizontal relationship between the screen and the architectural surround.

2. Warm Vertical Wood Slats

The middle section connects the upper TV volume with the lower base.

Vertical wood slats introduce warmth, rhythm, and a finer level of detail between the two heavier architectural forms. Their natural brown tone contrasts with both the cool concrete-effect finish above and the polished black surface below.

Because the upper volume projects beyond the slats, this section is partially recessed. The change in depth creates shadow lines and makes the upper element appear to float over the center of the installation.

The repeated vertical pattern also balances the strong horizontal proportions of the television and lower platform.

3. Black Granite Base with Marble-Like Veining

The lower section is a wide architectural plinth finished with polished black granite tile.

Fine white veining gives the surface a marble-inspired appearance, while the dark reflective finish creates a strong visual foundation for the entire composition. The tile continues across the horizontal top and around the front and side faces, making the base read as one solid volume.

This lower platform does not contain a fireplace. Its purpose is architectural: it grounds the media wall, provides visual weight, and establishes a clean horizontal line between the installation and the floor.

Designed Around the Room

The media wall is centered between two tall, narrow windows. Their black frames reinforce the dark accents in the TV, the gaps between the wood slats, and the granite base.

Rather than covering the entire wall, the installation occupies a defined central zone. This preserves daylight from both sides and allows the feature to stand as an independent architectural object.

The composition is restrained in the number of materials it uses, but expressive in the way those materials are layered:

  • A textured concrete-effect finish

  • Warm vertical wood slats

  • Polished black granite tile

  • A large integrated television

  • Concealed power and media wiring

  • Carefully controlled projections and shadow lines

Why the Material Combination Works

Much of the visual impact comes from contrast.

The concrete-effect upper volume feels solid, mineral, and substantial. The wood slats add warmth and a repeated natural rhythm. The black granite base introduces polish, depth, and a more luxurious surface.

The three finishes also respond differently to light. The decorative cement coating absorbs and diffuses it, the wood reveals linear grain and shadow, and the polished granite produces subtle reflections.

These differences make the wall feel layered and dimensional even though the overall silhouette remains simple.

A Bespoke Project Outside the Standard Series

Our media wall models provide useful architectural starting points for most projects. They help homeowners compare layouts, understand construction scope, and identify a direction that can be adapted to their room.

This Dallas installation followed a different path.

The client had a specific idea that did not correspond to an existing model or series. Instead of forcing the concept into a predefined category, we developed a fully custom solution around the desired forms, finishes, television placement, and room conditions.

The project demonstrates an important part of our approach: models can simplify the design process, but they do not limit what can be built.
